R.I.P. "Pete" Peterson
my old boss from KBSZ Wickenburg Arizona
"Spirit In The Sky"
Today I received very sad news from my old town of Wickenburg Arizona.
Jo Peterson wife and co-owner of KBSZ 1250 AM radio informed me that her husband (my old boss) passed away yesterday.
I didn't know what to say.
I just remembered his voice and I cried.
(poor Jo)
R.A. "Pete" Peterson was a long time radio man, husband and father who
raised beautiful horses that he raced.
I never could tell which he loved more, his wife, his family, those horses or KBSZ.
I was lucky enough to see Pete and Jo last year here in Michigan while we
were renting a home on North Shore Drive in South Haven.
Jo was attending to her 50th High School Reuion.
I remember Saturday mornings Pete poking his head in to check on me with Belle the dog at his side before he went down to the Hassayampa River where
he kept the horses.
Friday nights durring football season you could hear Pete on KBSZ annoucing the High School Football game, cheering the Wranglers on to victory
with Jo working the controlls back at the station with Belle at her side.
Pete was a good man and always said he had the perfect face for radio.
When I first met this tall cowboy (with a hippie soul)
I was going door to door in the Wickenburg business comunity asking merchants
to join our new group called W.A.M.O.
(Wickenburg Area Merchants Association)
Pete smiled, wrote me a check and proudly stuck the sticker on the door.
Not long after I met Pete again this time with his wife Jo while giving a presentation
to the Chamber of Commerce about having a "Rock-a-billy Festival" out at
our rodeo grounds.
They wern't much interested BUT Pete and Jo were.
When I got a call from them asking me to met them at their new offices about
my idea, I had no clue they were going to stick a microphone in front of me.
Pete and Jo were very inovative and open minded people with a great sense of humour,
I can honestley say I enjoyed every shift I held down at the 'radio ranch'.
When I got this amazing CD called
"Rockin' And Boppin' In The Desert Volume 1" from John P. Dixon,
I got a wild idea to contact all the Rock-a-billy cats I could from the
Arizona/Viv Records compilation and have a reuion of sorts for them at the radio station.
Pete and Jo loved the idea and on their dime we set up the station for party
not knowing what to expect.
It was magic!
What a wonderful thing Pete and Jo let me put together for these great people
who some hadn't seen eachother in over 30 years.
There are so many other great stories about Pete and Jo, but these are just a few
that I will treasure.
Were gonna miss you big guy,
a spirit in the sky...
